In addition to the policy amendments, as of this date all classification specialists will be reviewed monthly to ensure strict new quotas in each classification category are being met. Failure to meet these quotas will result in immediate job termination and reclassification to another position or, where deemed necessary, incarceration in the mines.

Lexington was stunned. Not just by the changes to the classification outcomes, but the fact that he would now be having his job performance monitored. He looked at his co-worker waiting patiently at his door. The ramifications of the new policy meant more people would ultimately be sent to the mines. He couldn’t believe a level 3 was now considered a danger to society. What would happen to all the existing level 3’s? His jaw dropped.

“Yuh-huh,” said the woman, who was obviously waiting for his reaction. “Word has it they are going to start retesting everyone who was ever registered at level 3. According to this new policy, they shouldn’t be free.”

“But that’s me!” exclaimed Lexington.

“And me,” she said. “Hell. Most of the medical and psychiatric staff are level 3. It’s the highest intelligence level they’ll still let be free.”

“But with the 4s and 5s incarcerated, it’s the 3s that are running the place,” Lexington sighed. “I don’t want to sound bigoted, but our society can’t be run by level 2s. It just won’t function.” He raked his fingers through his hair. “Shit. This could be serious.”

“You don’t say.”
